V.I.P.E.R. (Violent Incident Proactive Enforcement Response) began operation on 31 December 2008 to address violent crime in the southwest portion of the county. The following are just some of the operations conducted during 2010.
The primary function of V.I.P.E.R is to target high crime areas and concentrate on reducing crime in that area. This not only includes residential crime but commercial crime as well. A reduction in crime has been attributed to V.I.P.E.R.
VIPER members are carefully selected to participate and each member brings a unique talent to the team. Officers with experience in Narcotics, SWAT, and Investigations make up the VIPER Team. The VIPER team has a K-9 Officer and dog assigned to the Unit.
In addition, V.I.P.E.R. also assist other Agencies in the County.
VIPER assisted CMANS in the search of a number of known drug locations throughout the county.
VIPER assisted in two sex offender registry checks where each registered sex offender is contacted to verify residence and compliance with probation/parole requirements.Previously, one operation was conducted annually. However, with the success of one- a decision was made to conduct a second. The operation is done in conjunction with Probation/Parole, CMANS, Gang Unit, and Reserve Unit participating. This year Cobb Sheriff’s Office attended as observers in plans of conducting a similar operation in Cobb County.
VIPER assisted the Cherokee County Marshal’s Office in the closing of 2 businesses that were operating illegally.
VIPER assisted in the annual holiday road check operation conducted by the traffic unit.
VIPER members are committed to the unit often working overtime or on their days off when requested.
VIPER assisted The United States Marshal’s and Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Unit in Operation Blue Falcon.
As with previous years, no complaints/allegations were made against any VIPER Team member in relation to any operation.
