Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. August 12, 2011. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office would like to warn citizens about a scam that has recently been identified in Georgia. The scam targets people who have family members in the local jail. The way the scam works is that family members are contacted by phone, the caller identifies himself as an officer from the sheriff's office and advises the family that if they put funds into a PayPal account their family member will be allowed to bond out of the jail. This scam has recently occurred in Chatham County Georgia.

Citizens with family members in custody in the Cherokee Adult Detention Center should be advised that under no circumstances will an employee from the Cherokee Sheriff's Office contact them and solicit funds for a bond.
