Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison has announced he has authorized reducing the hiring age of Detention Officers to 18 years of age. The Sheriff created the position of detention officer in March 2000, in order to attract those young people interested in a law enforcement career who previously had to wait until they reach the age of 21.
Detention Officers perform all duties within the detention center and are unarmed and are not sworn personnel. They are required to adhere to all employment qualifications currently in effect. Beginning pay is the same as an uncertified deputy, complete with all county fringe benefits. Basic qualifications are a minimum 18 years of age, a high school graduate or GED, valid driver's license, and a US citizen. Interested persons can pick up an application at any sheriff's office location or contact Lt. Jim Harvey at 770-345-3300.
