April 17, 2002

Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. April 17, 2002. At approximately 9:00 a.m. deputies of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded to the Coastal Gas Station located on Bells Ferry Road. A concerned citizen called 911 when he noticed two small children had been left unattended in a car for an extended period of time while their father was inside playing video poker. The two children 4 months old and 19 months old were transported to Scottish Rite Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Upon further investigation it was discovered that there were three other children located at the family residence that were also left unsupervised. The Sheriff's Office responded to the residence and found three children ages 3, 5, and 8 years old at home alone. The three children were also transported to Scottish Rite Hospital for evaluation. All five of these children as well as two older children were taken into protective custody by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office due to conditions of the home and lack of parental supervision. The father of the children George Gingrich, 44 years of age of Acworth was arrested and charged with five counts of reckless conduct and one count of cruelty to children in the 1st degree.

Gingrich is currently being held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center with a bond of $25,050. Investigation is continuing through the Cherokee County Criminal Investigations Division and Cherokee County Department of Family and Children Services.
