On June 5, 2002, Sheriff Roger Garrison was appointed by Governor Roy Barnes to serve on a committee for the investigation of Effingham County's Sheriff.
The Effingham County Board of Commissioners and the Georgia Sheriff's Association have requested the Governor form a committee to investigate allegations against Effingham County's Sheriff, Roy Space for incapacity to perform his duties pursuant to his elected office. The appointed committee consists of Attorney General Thurbert Baker, Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison and Tift County Sheriff Gary Vowell.
The committee has 30 days to file a report to the Governor of their investigation. If the committee recommends the suspension of Sheriff Space, the most the Governor is authorized to do according to State Law is suspend Sheriff Space for 60 days. The suspension can be extended but for a maximum amount of 30 days. The only way Sheriff Space can be removed from his office is if the District Attorney for the Ogeechee Circuit brings a removal petition against the Sheriff.
