Press Release Fatal Car Crash

July 24, 2002

Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. July 24, 2002. At approximately 8:00 p.m. on July 23, 2002 deputies from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded to a fatal car crash on Interstate 575. A blue Nissan Maxima was traveling south on Interstate 575 at a high rate of speed. The blue Maxima was also passing slower moving traffic on the outside emergency lane. The vehicle swerved and crossed the two southbound lanes before crossing over the median and striking four other vehicles and avoiding one vehicle traveling North on Interstate 575.

Fortino Rayes, 24 years of age of Marietta, Ga., the driver of the Nissan Maxima, died at the scene of the crash. The drivers and passengers of the five other vehicles sustained very minor injuries and were treated at the scene of the crash. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the fatal car crash.
