Woodstock, Cherokee County, Ga. August 6, 2002.
Governor Barnes recently commented on the more than 1,600 fatality car crashes that occurred on Georgia highways last year and promises to step up the state's enforcement efforts. Deputies here in Cherokee County have noted more traffic congestion and investigated several serious car crashes including 21 fatality car crashes last year and 11 fatality crashes so far this year. As we prepare to start a new school year, members of the Sheriff's Office concerned about the safety of our children will be out in force next week targeting speeders.
Sheriff Roger Garrison will have his entire Traffic Enforcement Unit concentrating their efforts in and around school zones for the first week of school. Additionally, patrol deputies from the night shift will work past their normal hours and evening shift patrol officers will report early for duty to allow for double coverage during the morning and afternoon commute to school.
Motorist are asked to have patience because of the heavy traffic congestion expected on our roads next week and to slow down, obey the speed limit and use caution when passing through school zones.
