Press Release Cell Phone Case
Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. September 17, 2002.
- Canton, Cherokee County, GA September 12, 2002. At approximately 10:30 a.m. the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded to Upper Sweetwater Trail in reference to a female that had been left in the woods. Cherokee County 911 received a call from a female that was stating that she was in the woods in an unknown area and needed help. The female was able to describe parts of her location to the Cherokee County Dispatchers. The dispatchers were able to assess the female's location to Upper Sweetwater Trail. Responding deputies made a quick assessment of the wooded area and asked for search assistance from Cherokee Fire Search and Rescue, Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). GSP and DNR assisted the search with a helicopter and four-wheelers equipped with GPS units. The Cherokee County dispatchers did an outstanding job keeping the female on the phone while the GSP helicopter and a DNR pickup truck located her in the woods at approximately 2:00 P.M.
- The victim is air lifted to a local hospital for medical attention. Detectives interviewed her and completed a sexual assault kit. The kit has been sent to the crime lab for analysis. Prior to surgery, the victim was able to give us information that helped to identify possible suspects that physically assaulted her.
- Friday morning, Cherokee 911 dispatch receives a call of a possible shooting on Kellogg Creek Road. A bleeding victim allegedly knocked on the door of the Kellogg Creek Rd. residence and claimed to have been shot and thrown from a speeding vehicle. CID responded and the victim was taken to the hospital. He identified the shooter only as "Danny" and said Danny drives a red four-wheel drive Chevrolet pickup truck with Missouri plates and gave us directions to where Danny possibly lives. Those directions led us to an Oak Drive residence in Acworth GA (Bartow County) where we located a red GMC four-wheel drive pickup with Missouri plates. Bartow and Cherokee units interviewed numerous subjects there on the scene, arresting several for drugs and active warrants.
- Interviews confirm that the suspect is Danny Dutton, a 30 year old W/M approximately 5'09' and 175 lbs., Blue Eyes, Red Hair, Date of Birth 1971/10/07 from Missouri, and that he is currently wanted for Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer in Missouri.
- After the shooting, the suspect returned to Oak Drive in Acworth where he left his truck and stole the car belonging to the shooting victim.
- Saturday approximately 0500 hours. CID responds to vehicle found in the woods near I-75. It is the brown Nova stolen from Bartow, belonging to the victim of the shooting.
- Sunday evening about 3:30 PM a call received by CID leads us to recovered a sawed off .410 shotgun allegedly used in the shooting.
- Sunday evening we link a Friday night burglary with the suspect. A south Cherokee county woman came home to find a man in her house. He demanded a car and a gun. She had no gun to give him but he took her car keys/ car / and jewelry.
- Monday, we get information that our suspect was involved in a vehicle chase in Illinois near the Missouri State line. Police were unable to apprehend the suspect. The vehicle stolen in south Cherokee was abandoned in Missouri. We suspect that the shooting suspect has stolen at least two other pickup trucks in that state since.
- We currently have charges on him for Aggravated Assault. Pending in Cherokee is Motor Vehicle Theft and Burglary. When venue of the kidnapping / beating / of girl is established, proper GA authorities will take charges.
- He came to GA to avoid arrest on Missouri charges for Aggravated Assault on Police Officer.
- The motive for these incidents are unknown at this time, but we suspect that they may related to previous drug prosecutions in Cherokee County.
