Holiday Safety

Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. December 18, 2002   The holidays are a time for cheer and joy. Unfortunately, it can be a time when crime is more apparent. Sheriff Garrison would like to offer a few safety tips for the holiday that will help in making this holiday season a safe and happy one. Be careful of people coming to your door and posing as a delivery courier. If a stranger comes to the door do not feel obligated to open the door for them. Around the holiday times people try to take advantage of others' generosity and will go door-to-door posing as a representative from a charity. Feel free to ask that person for a number to the charity office so you can call and verify their validity before you give them money. Don't be afraid to ask how the funds will be used. Sheriff Garrison also has suggestions for home safety if you plan on leaving town. If you are leaving town, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your house for any suspicious activity and to call 911 if they see a problem. Remember to place automatic timers on your lights in the house as well as on the outside of the house. Lastly, do not forget to stop the delivery of mail and newspapers to your house. Have a safe and joyous holiday season.
