Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. May 9, 2003 As Cherokee County grows, so does the business community. Every time you turn around there is a new business open in the area. While growth in the community is a welcoming sight, there are some precautions business owners might want to take to ensure the safety of their inventory. Sheriff Garrison has some quick suggestions for business owners in the area. When closing your business establishment for the night, make sure the cash register drawer is open so a person staking out the area can see there is no money. If the register is kept close to the front of the store, law enforcement can make sure it is in tact during their nightly rounds. Another suggestion Sheriff Garrison has is to keep the clutter of posters or signs on the front windows to a minimum. If business owners place a lot of signs on their front windows, it makes it difficult for deputies to see if everything is okay in the store. If you keep things on the windows you are making a burglars job easier. Lastly, alarm systems for businesses are a must. Business owners need to make sure they have a system in place that alerts outsiders that there is a problem within the store. Storeowners also need to make sure that they have a camera system in place. A camera system can be a very effective aide for law enforcement if the business is robbed or burglarized. If you do have cameras, please make sure the tapes are changed out regularly and that the tapes are updated.
Sheriff Garrison welcomes the new businesses and their success in the community. If you would like to start a business crime watch program, please call 770-928-0239.
