Motorcycle crashes and fatalities are on the rise. Because motorcycles can sometimes be difficult for motorist to see Sheriff Garrison would like to offer some safety measures drivers can take when traveling our county roads and highways to ensure motorcycles and vehicles share the road safely. Drivers of motorcycles should be visible. Motorcycles are often hard to see. Motorcycle drivers can increase their visibility if they wear reflective clothing and use their headlights. Drivers of motorcycles also need to alert other drivers of their intentions by using proper signals and changing lanes properly. According to Georgia State Motorcycle Manual, when in a vehicle. following a motorcycle, allow at least a two second space cushion to allow driver reaction time in case of unexpected surprises. Because motorcycles have only half as many wheels as most vehicles, minor problems in the roads such as potholes or railroad crossings can be major hazards for a motorcycle operator.
As our population increases, so does the number of people on our county roads and highways. Sheriff Garrison would like you to keep these tips in mind as you share the roads with all different types of vehicles to ensure a safe trip for you and your family.
