Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. September 29, 2003  On September 26, 2003, at approximately 4:00 a.m. deputies from The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to 4225 Union Hill Road in reference to a burglar in a residence.

Upon arrival deputies determined an unidentified male subject had knocked on the residence door and asked the homeowner to use the phone. The owner of the residence got his cell phone and stepped outside to allow the subject to use the phone where allegedly the subject struck the homeowner in the head with a bottle. The homeowner ran inside and locked the door while the suspect got into the resident's Land Rover and sped away. Approximately a mile down the road the suspect lost control of the Land Rover and went off the roadway through a fence and crashed into some trees near the end of a field. Deputies searched the area for the stolen vehicle, which was discovered around 10:00 a.m. that morning when a nearby resident went to check her mailbox. Deputies were dispatched and discovered the vehicle was the one stolen several hours earlier. The suspect's body was found near the vehicle and has been identified as Robert Simon, 41 years of age of New Hampshire.
