Woodstock, Cherokee County, Ga. October 9, 2003 On September 29, 2003, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office received a report of a burglary that occurred at 4200 Hickory Point Drive. The victim reported that a GMC pickup truck that is used for work purposes had been taken as well as some personal information such as a birth certificate; passport and Social Security card taken from the residence. The next day, September 30, 2003, the pickup truck reported stolen was recovered in Pickens County. The Sheriff's Office learned that the perpetrator obtained a Georgia drivers license in the victim's name, but used his own picture for the license. On October 5, 2003, a local jewelry company contacted the victim alerting that there were different accounts being opened with the victim's Social Security number, but using the perpetrators name. The next morning, October 6, 2003, the victim contacted the credit bureaus to learn that there was a high volume of activity on the account. The victim learned that there were numerous retail credit accounts being opened as well as vehicle purchases. Detectives found that one of the retail store purchases were for four handguns. The ATF application was pulled of this purchase to find the fraudulent license had been used to purchase the weapons. There was also one vehicle and two motorcycles that were purchased, with a couple of them being purchased out of Roswell.
Detectives with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at the suspect's house where they were able to recover property from another previous burglary and information that linked the suspect to the fraudulently purchased vehicles.
Detectives contacted the Roswell Police Department to alert them of the vehicles that were illegally purchased in Roswell and to alert them of the suspect possibly being in the area. On the evening of October 8, 2003, the Roswell Police Department received calls of a suspicious male lurking around with a firearm. A short chase ensued where the suspect attempted to jump a fence and accidentally shot himself in the leg. The suspect was taken to a local hospital where the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office was able to place him into custody. Wesley McClain, 32 years of age of Woodstock is currently being held at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center charge with 2 counts of burglary, 6 counts of identity fraud, forgery in 2nd degree, 7 counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and 3 counts of theft by receiving with additional charges expected. McClain currently has a bond set at $490,680.37.
