Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. March 23, 2004 The Irish Travelers have traditionally come into Cherokee County every few years. Although Cherokee County has not experienced any recent problems, Sheriff Roger Garrison would like you to be aware of their scams. The Travelers are well known for home repair scams usually targeting the elderly. One of the scams that the Travelers are notorious for is coming to your door and tell you they have a load of hot asphalt left over from another job or that they are painting and roofing in the area and you must act quickly to receive the special price. The Travelers tend to intimidate the people during the transaction of money. The Travelers leave the area and cash your check before you can inspect their job. The work is usually of poor quality or inadequate. Travelers will usually have new vehicles with out of state tags and they will give you out of state contact numbers.
Sheriff Garrison reminds residents not to feel pressured when solicited by someone to do work on their residence. Take the time to ask for and verify references and work permits. If you decide to have services done to your property do not pay for the services in advance and do not pay more than the original agreed upon price.
If you feel that you have been approached by a group of Irish Travelers, please call the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division at 770-928-0239.
