Press Release
Littering

Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. April 23, 2004  The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is responding to complaints of larger amounts of liter on our roadways. Sheriff Roger Garrison requested all county law enforcement agencies work together to enforce State and County Littering laws on vehicles traveling on county roads. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office has written 27 tickets for the State violation of Littering on a Highway since January 1, 2004 and 12 tickets for the State violation of Failure to Secure Load. There is a difference between the two violations: Littering on the highway is any type of paper or some form of light trash being thrown from a vehicle and failure to secure load occurs when furniture or some type of large object falls from a vehicle that can cause a serious road hazard. Both of these violations start with a fine of $400 and can increase to $1,200 for every violation thereafter. More often than not, when a vehicle is stopped for a littering violation there are other problems such as equipment, tag or license violations. The Sheriff's Office has spoken with many of the companies whose trucks have been issued violations and the companies are attempting to change their vehicle standards as to comply with the State Law and County ordinance.
