Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. April 25, 2004 Identity theft is a crime that is on every consumers mind. Sheriff Roger Garrison would like to give the community a few precautions you can take to prevent this type of crime from occurring to you.
Before giving out personal information, find out how it will be used. Ask if the information can be kept confidential. Only give out your social security number when necessary. Place passwords on all financial accounts, but avoid using birth dates, social security numbers or mother's maiden name. Keep a minimum amount of personal information in your purse/wallet. Remove your mail from your mailbox in a timely fashion. Shred any documents that contain your personal information. Lastly, Sheriff Garrison recommends that you verify who has access to your personal information at work and ask if they are kept in a secure place.
Sheriff Garrison would like to remind the community that identity theft can happen to anyone. You can prevent this crime by taking all the necessary precautions.
