Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. May 11, 2004 May 15 was designated National Peace Officers' Memorial Day in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. The week containing May 15th was designated National Police Week. National activities are hosted each year in Washington DC, to honor those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice the previous calendar year and to offer support to the survivors of those officers as well as survivors of past years. Employees of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office will be attending the National Peace Officers' Memorial as well as the ceremonies for the wall of fallen heroes in Forsyth, Ga where Deputy Wayne Woodard's name will be appear.
Employees of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office mourn a friend and a colleague that passed away in the line of duty, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Saturday August 2, 2003. Deputy Woodard was responding to a burglar in the residence call when his car crashed into a tree on the side of Highway 369.
Deputy Sheriff Wayne Woodard started his career with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office in November 2001. In March of 2003 he was transferred from the Adult Detention Center to the Uniform Patrol Division where he was assigned to the Hickory Flat Precinct.
Deputy Sheriff Woodard will be remembered for his integrity as a Deputy Sheriff as well as a friend to all. Sheriff Garrison and his fellow deputies extend their support to the family and friends of Deputy Sheriff Wayne Woodard during this week of remembrance.
