Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. June 7, 2004  At approximately 4:15, June 6, 2004, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office responded to 1047 Middlebrook Drive in reference to a domestic dispute.

Upon arrival to the residence, the two children and wife ran out of the house and explained to the deputies that the father was armed with a weapon. The father, Clarence Caviness 51 years of age, was standing in the front doorway as deputies gave him commands to show both of his hands and to come out and talk to them. Caviness did not respond to the deputies' commands and was subsequently shot with a beanbag round, which is a less than lethal response technique, in attempt to gain control of the situation. The father then fled into the house where deputies pursued him and shot him again with a beanbag round in the backside. The Cherokee County SWAT team and Hostage Negotiations team later found Caviness in the basement where he had shot himself and died.
