Press Release
New Technology for the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office

Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. March 23, 2005  In November 2004, Sheriff Roger Garrison deployed Facial Recognition technology to aid in the intake and release of inmates at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center. In a partnership with AWT, Inc. of Atlanta, Ga, a leading integrator of Facial Recognition Biometric Security Solutions, the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office has implemented a new strategy to help ensure the positive identification of prisoners entering and exiting its 512-bed detention facility.

Since the installation of the system, it maintains a zero percent (0%) False Acceptance Rate (FAR). In being only the second county in Metro Atlanta to invest in facial recognition technology, Cherokee County, is among the small, yet growing, group of elite law enforcement agencies that are willing and able to be leaders in the field and use the best technology on the market to better serve their constituents.

The Geometrix, Inc. Face Vision Technology, which empowers the AWT facial recognition solution, is used for prisoner processing, mainly because identity fraud is a major problem in law enforcement. It is estimated that between 30-60% of repeat offenders have not one, but several false identities. This system will positively identify an individual if she/he has been booked in to the Adult Detention Center before and will list the information from each arrest. Since identity fraud is a crime, each violation can carry an additional penalty. In addition, this system will help to ensure that no inmate will be wrongly released from our custody due to mistaken identity.

In the near future, this system will also have the capability to allow the metro county Sheriff’s Office participants to scan each others databases to track inmates and identity offenders of identity fraud. At the present time, in addition to Cherokee, only Cobb County and Douglas County have this technology.
