Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. September 26, 2005 On September 15, 2005, Robby Westbrook, who heads up the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for the Sheriff’s Office, was deployed to assist the residents of Hancock County, Mississippi. Westbrook was assigned to an Emergency Management Assistance Compact responsible for distributing food and water, setting up tarp cities and establishing medical clinics for the thousands left homeless after Hurricane Katrina.
Hancock County, considered ground zero for the storm, experienced devastation and most of the citizens in the southern part of the county are homeless. Extensive damage was widespread over most of the rest of the region. Many other regions of southern Mississippi suffered major damage as well. Robby’s deployment ended on September 25, 2005 and he said, “what I have seen in Mississippi I will never forget and it will change me forever.”
