Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. April 6, 2006   During the past months there has been a rise in what is commonly known as distraction scams or the Irish Travelers in the area. These incidents normally involve two suspects working together using some type of ruse to distract the victim so that one of the suspects can enter the home and steal cash or other valuable items. They often prey upon the elderly and have been known to communicate during the incident using cell phones and Nextel phones.
Recent incidents in the Metro Area have involved two white males approaching elderly victims in attempts to sell them small pieces of floor covering, or asking to evaluate the victims' roof for possible damage and needed repairs. One of the suspects normally keeps the victim engaged in conversation while the second suspect enters the home and commits thefts.
The Sheriff' s Office asks all citizens to be wary of anyone who approaches them at their home and offers to sell roofing repairs, floor covering, driveway repairs, asphalt or any similar type situation. Anyone having knowledge of such incidents may contact CSO investigators Sergeant Scott Seagraves or Detective Charlie Weber at 770-928-0239.
