Waleska, Cherokee County, Ga.  June 22, 2006   Something that sounds too good to be true, usually is. Internet fraud is a crime that is on a rise and Sheriff Roger Garrison would like to give the community a few precautions that can be taken to prevent an Internet scam from occurring to you.

There is currently an Internet scam that begins as an email where someone offers you a fee to deposit checks or money orders into your account. Once you make the transaction you would keep a fee from the transaction and then send the remaining money to the person who has contacted you. The problem is the money order or checks you are receiving are usually counterfeit. Sheriff Garrison recommends that if you are contacted by a person you are not familiar with asking you to perform any type of financial transaction to contact the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office at 770-928-0239, The Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs at 404-651-8600 or the Office of the Georgia Attorney General at 404-651-9340.
