Consent Order Terminated

Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. September 25, 2007-A 1992 Federal Consent Order directing that certain actions be taken with respect to inmate housing and inmate life in the Cherokee County Jail has been terminated. Federal Judge Orinda Evans signed the request to terminate the consent order in July of this year but the deadline to appeal that order has just passed. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office requested the termination of the consent order in 2006.

The original Civil Action was filed on behalf of John Rhodes, an inmate in the Cherokee County Jail when then Sheriff John Seay was in office. The original order placed requirements on the agency that affected almost every aspect of an inmates stay at the Cherokee County Jail. At the time of the 1992 consent order there were approximately 100 inmates being housed at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center. There are currently 607 inmates housed at the location.

"I am very pleased to have the Federal Courts out of the day to day operations of the Adult Detention Center. The termination of the consent order is a clear indication that the jail is being managed properly and under the highest of standards." - Sheriff Roger Garrison
