Manhole Cover Thefts
|
Canton, Cherokee County, Ga. May 7, 2008- The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is investigating a recent rash of man-hole cover thefts. Since April 29th approximately 28 cast iron man-hole covers have been removed from the roadway leaving exposed man-holes which can be extremely hazardous for pedestrians and automobiles. Investigators are confident the thefts of the covers are simply a way for the suspects to make quick cash at local metal recycling facilities. It is estimated that one 80 pound man-hole cover will bring only $15.00 at a recycling center, however it can cost the Cherokee County Water and Sewage Authority (CCWAS) over $200.00 to replace the cover. The thefts have all occurred in the Sixes Rd. and Ridge Rd. area. Citizens are urged to call 911 if they see anyone other than a CCWAS employee near a man-hole. Anyone with any information about the thefts is urged to contact the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 770-928-0239. |
