May 21, 2008- In lieu of the Tuesday’s storms the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office wants to warn residents that received property damage to be wary of unethical salespersons and contractors that will likely converge on the affected area looking for potential victims to defraud. If you or your family members received storm damage and are approached by construction companies to do storm damage repair be very cautious before signing a contract or giving money to the individual. Make sure the company has a business license and is insured. Ask questions to ensure they are legitimate and check their references. If the individual asks for payment prior to performing any work it is recommended you use another contractor. If you are approached by an individual that you think is possibly attempting to defraud you, call 911.
