The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Reserves the Right to Change Any/All Requirements

• Application
  The first step for each interested applicant is to get the standard Employment Application. This can be done by downloading the application via the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office web page, or picking up a copy from Human Resources, located in the Administrative Services offices at the Adult Detention Center.
• Written Tests
  Once your application has been received and reviewed, you will be contacted and scheduled to take an adult basic education test. This test is broken into sections which evaluate mathematical skills, reading comprehension, and logical thinking. The test is usually scheduled in the morning, at the Cherokee County South Annex offices in Woodstock. Following the test, you will be instructed to meet in the early afternoon at the Adult Detention Center for test results, and the next step in the hiring process. Applicants passing the test will be asked to remain to continue the process. Applicants not making a passing score will be given instructions regarding re-applying, should they wish to re-schedule the examination.
• Physical Agility Tests
  In the Reserve Unit, it is not required that Reserve applicants take the physical agility test, which is required for Regular Deputy candidates. It is, however, highly recommended that applicants take this test. It consists of a 3 minute period in which the applicant will run a short distance, jump over a small ditch, climb over and under a rail fence, climb over a 6 foot wall, climb through an open window, ascend and descend a stairwell, receive instruction from a training officer, and drag a 150 pound dummy 50 feet.
• Background Check
  The background check is performed in three phases.
  The first phase is the completion of a Background Investigation Form, which is returned to an Internal Affairs officer.
  The second phase is an interview between the applicant and the Internal Affairs officer, to review the information in the form, ensure that all requested information is present, and clarify any information as required.
  The final phase is the actual investigation, performed by an Internal Affairs officer, based upon the information provided by the applicant.
• Polygraph Test
  Each applicant will be required to undergo a polygraph examination, provided by the Sheriff's Office. It is a series of approximately 20 questions, and takes no more than 45 minutes to perform.
• Reserve Hiring Board
  Applicants proceeding to this point will be scheduled to come before a Hiring Board composed of 4-5 members of the Reserve Unit. At this time, the applicant is interviewed by the board, and at the conclusion of the interview, a decision is made to extend a conditional offer of employment. Individuals who accept this offer continue with the final stages of the hiring process.
• Medical Examination
  All applicants will receive a county provided medical examination, conducted by the county's medical physician. This includes sight and hearing examinations, as well as a drug screening.
• Psychological Written Tests
  Applicants will be scheduled to take a series of psychological written examinations. This is a series of four, separate timed tests.
• Psychological Interview
  Applicants will then be scheduled for a psychological interview, conducted by the county's psychiatrist. This interview usually ranges from 30 minutes to an hour.

Congratulations! Applicants who have made it through this thorough, regimented process are now members of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Reserve Unit. At this time, you will be assigned to an internal squad, and begin to receive training under the supervision of the Reserve Training Sergeant. Additionally, you can begin to participate in Reserve Unit activities. It is a requirement that all Reserve Deputies perform a minimum of 16 hours of service each month.
